Why did I become an artist?
When I search my soul for songs, I find that my most authentic writing contains themes of courage, perseverance, and devotion.
For most of my life, I didn't see becoming an artist as a viable option for myself. My primary focus had always been music, but I chose the safer path of pursuing music education. Despite finding fulfillment in all aspects of my musical journey, there remained an inner longing to write, record, and perform. As I delved deeper into directing, my passion for performing only grew more prominent.
I've written hundreds of songs, many of which may never be shared. The ones I have shared publicly received overwhelmingly positive feedback, invoking within listeners feelings of hope, or faith, or love. This purposeful impact is why I identify as an artist.
What kind of artist am I?
Songwriting
My writing centers on honest, emotionally intelligent storytelling—balancing introspective verses with singable, often uplifting choruses. Lyrics are personal and direct, with clever phrasing and emotional clarity. I love to write songs that express feelings which are difficult to convey through words, especially in ways that deeply resonate with others. Some major songwriting influences of mine include Sara Bareilles, Kacey Musgraves, Julia Michaels, and Taylor Swift - specifically the “Speak Now” and “Lover” eras.
Vocals
Though I do have a master’s degree in vocal performance, I emphasize authenticity over technical flash. I go for a nuanced, expressive tone paired with conversational phrasing, all of which can make the song feel more intimate for the listener. I love to use what I know about the voice to adapt to the big dynamic shifts in my songs, combining vulnerability and confidence in my expression. Some of my biggest vocal influences include Sara Bareilles, Hayley Williams, and Maggie Rogers.
Production
I’ve worked almost exclusively with a producer in Nashville, Nathan Pauley, for the past four years. Nathan has played a crucial role in helping me identify my sound as an artist by collaborating with me on everything from demos to mixing & mastering. Almost every instrument you hear on one of my songs is performed or created by him, and his ear for tracking keys/piano is what I would consider to be his most indispensable gift. Influences for the production of my latest music are numerous, as Nathan and I are both pop-music fiends, but I’d say the topmost are Maggie Rogers and Hailee Steinfeld.
